The Department of Agriculture Sabah has officially existed as a separate entity since November, 1946. In the early stages, the Department of Agriculture Sabah was also responsible for the affairs of animal husbandry enterprises and fishing.

After Sabah achieved independence, several departments and separate agencies were created under the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry to deal with other areas and certain aspects related to the development of the crop industry. Currently, the Department of Agriculture Sabah is among several Departments and Agencies under this Ministry.
